Well I just bought recently a 2005 VTX 1300R with only 6,400 miles on it and the owner said he never had it serviced. So I went to the dealer and had a complete service on my bike. Yes it was expensive. It was $275 bux, but they went thru the complete bike, valves, carb, plugs, filters , oils bolts, breaks etc etc. Took them 4 hrs.After reading several threads about oil, decided it was time to do an oil change myself. In the last 4 years of owning an Aero 750 and now a VTX 1300 I had been taking the bike in to the dealer per the maintenance schedule. Have done a bunch of mods from all the great posts on the cafe, but left the maintenance work to the shop.

Motor Oil For VTX 1300C. Motorcycle oil seems to just be outrageously expensive by comparison to regular motor oil for your car/truck for the same viscosity. I've read several places that as long as you don't buy the oil labeled "energy saving" using motor oil for your bike should be just fine and it's about 1/2 the cost.

They stated that you need to season your seals when you switch to synthetic. They would change their oil, use 1 quart AMSOIL and regular oil for the rest. Ride it for so many miles, then change the oil again, say 2 quarts AMSOIL and etc. They would do this until the use nothing but AMSOIL.It is just like an engine or fork oil change. I even let the bike run for 5-6 minutes with the system open while I topped off to ensure the thermostat opened to allow all air bubbles and hopefully air pockets to escape.
